Austin Tex-ass

I’m going to Austin this week. I've never been there. Anyone know what to do, where to go, what to see? Shows, Museums, Art Gallery, Clubs, Restaurants????

There's definitely plenty to do. Of course there's 6th Street. I'd also suggest walking around Guadalupe Street. If you're into Thai food, Madam Mam's is really good. This weekend, Blue October and Ours is playing at Stubb's (really good BBQ there). Railroad Earth is playing Antone's on Friday and Del Castillo is playing on Saturday. Morrissey is also in town on Sunday night at Bass Hall. Have a good time!

Blue October?? sorry James but *rowlf* ugh cant stand them.

yeah if you want bbq Lockhart and Dripping Springs are the way to go. but bring cash.

6th street is a good touristy area. If you want a tatoo the guys at True Blue are cool just don't be a douche and they'll do a good job.

Red River is a great area where most younger locals hang. a great just local bar there is called The Side Bar just small but nice. order a Lonestar or two and just chill out if you just want a place to hang out.

Madam Mams is good not my favorite, though my favorite Thai here is actually North in Cedar park called Thamnak Thai.

Another thing I recommend is of course The Alamo Drafthouse ..you get to watch a movie drink decent beer and order food. (I work at one so it's always funny when folks come in for the first time.)

Also when you get the chance pick up an Austin Chronicle they're free they can tell you what shows are going on....

generally there is quite a bit, but not always the best.

Amy's ice cream sometimes has art shows but really you should experience their ice cream.
If you are there anyways you should stop into Waterloo records, you may meet a bunch of Elitists types but you will definitely find some good music. That's on 6th and Lamar.

on Congress and right around the capital itself has a bunch of museums . further South on Congress you have a bunch of Thrift Stores and Shops though some expensive for thrifting fairly worth it. Also this is when Johnny and I ran into Rich and Mr. Stacey.

there are of course great coffee shops all over town, My favorite to go to and fairly popular is Epoch which is on North Loop. It's 24 hours and always busy with Students and well austinites. There are also some cool stores on the same street.

now Johnny as far as Comic shops depending on what you are looking for I always recommend Austin Books on Lamar. They tend to have everything there. and if you feel it is too pricey well than just go down to half price books. I can spend hours in one.

well let me kow if you need more or are lookin for something specific.

I was busy this mornng so I couldn't elaborate then.

enjoy Tex-ASS and try not to get your ASS kicked while here. lol

oh yeah and watch out for Cyclists they can be a real bitch here.

Thanks for all the advice. Does anyone know if Austin has an art district with a bunch of art galleries?

If i was going downthere. First thing i do when i get off the plane is do a shot of tequila and give a big 'YEE HAW" in the airport. Get in a cab, spark up a joint and go check out the new Cowboys "Cathedral of Football" stadium. Have a steak lunch with Jerry Jones and spark up another joint as we take a pick-up truck ride( like everyone else has )and go to Armstrongs bike shop "Mellow Johnnys." in downtown austin. Then finally knock on Johnnys Fevers door and take his place over till im done.No hotel needed. He"s my bee-cho!!

Thanks for all the advice. it was a quick trip, but a great one. i did get to see Railroad Earth at Antone's. What a crazy good live show. Saw some art, had some great Mexican food, and met the people who keep Austin Weird. Almost didn't feel like I was in Tex-Ass. My only regret was not making enough time to visit the Crawford Ranch, but with such a quick trip I though the extra couple hours was too much to hang with my old friend George.
